“Wear One, Bring One” Nov. 13

By Denise DuBois

Every year, an entertaining and empowering woman graces the stage of the St. Luke Ministry Center among more than 600 ladies delivering funny anecdotes and showing just how special it is when women come together to help one another. That’s the annual Power of the Purse luncheon.

The Power of the Purse luncheon, with the theme “Wear One, Bring One,” is a time for ladies (and some gentlemen) to gather, have lunch and provide new undergarments that are given to women throughout the community through United Way agencies. Last year, the Ministry Center’s stage was decorated with gift bags and tissue paper that held more than 2,200 undergarments. The event also raised thousands of dollars more that allowed United Way agencies to provide vouchers to women to purchase undergarments.

“Our goal with this luncheon is to inspire women in our community to continue to give back. The focus of Women United is ‘Women Helping Women,’ and the programs funded by Women United, and our many volunteer projects throughout the year, enable women to do just that, support one another,” said Rachel Chambless, the Women United director.

This year, author and philanthropist Amena Brown will be the guest speaker. Expect a mix of poetry, humor and storytelling. Brown has published five spoken word albums and two non-fiction books. She also has podcasts on her website www.amenabrown.com.

This year’s event will be Nov. 13 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Luke’s Ministry Center. There are four giving levels: $3,000 provides two tables for 16 attendees along with a package of mentions and thank yous; $1,500 provides a table for eight attendees along with a package of recognitions; $650 provides six individual tickets and logos throughout; $425 provides four individual tickets and recognition.
