Wright says youth panicked when behind

Expect the Central High Red Devils to see more work on the court this week after losing their first game of the season last week to Spencer High, 67-59. Central coach Bobby Wright was disappointed in his team’s response to trailing for the first time this season.
“I think our youth panicked when we got behind for the first time. We have a very young team. We have four players on the team who have never played before. When we panicked and then got into foul trouble. Because of that, I had to send in some of the kids who just came off the football field on Wednesday into a Friday game. They had not had time to get into basketball shape,” Wright said.
When the Red Devils were not committing fouls, they were making turnovers that led to Spencer points. The team – through its first five games – averages 21.4 turnovers per game. That is a number Wright wants to see drop.
“The turnovers are killing us. The best game we have had so far as far as turnovers go is with Opelika when we had just 13. We have had 22 or 23 turnovers in all the other games,” Wright said.
Of course, Wright’s Red Devils were not at their best against Spencer and we actually shorthanded as Tremaine Porter missed the contest due to a death in his family. The senior point guard has averaged over 15 points per game for the Red Devils so far.
Another problem the Red Devils suffered against Spencer was fouls. Spencer hit on 27 of 36 free throws in the game. Central attempted only 13 free throws.
“I lost my tall guys and had two other players with four fouls. We were within a point of catching up when we committed an intentional foul that gave them two free throws and the ball back. We could not come back from there,” Wright said.
Central is now 4-1 overall after winning two of three games last week. The Red Devils got the week started with a victory over rival Opelika High, winning 60-56.
Opelika led 13-12 after the first quarter and 27-26 at the half. At the end of the third quarter, Central trailed 41-39. In the final quarter, the Red Devils outscored Opelika 21-15 to get the victory. Tremere Brown led Central with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Porter had 17 points for the Red Devils.
Against Spencer, Central led 13-10 after a quarter of play. At halftime, Spencer led 37-25. When the third quarter ended, Central was down 50-37. In the last quarter, Central outscored Spencer 22-14, but fell short of a winning comeback.
Brown led Central with 22 points and had 17 rebounds. Radarius Hinnant scored 17 and grabbed nine rebounds for the Red Devils.
In their final game of the week, Central defeated Northview 59-48. The two teams played close in the first quarter with Central leading 11-10.
At half time, Central led 41-28 as the Red Devils poured in 30 points during the eight-minute span. At the end of the third quarter, Central led 49-39. Brown had 24 points with 15 rebounds for the Red Devils as he had his fifth double-double of the season. Josh Biggs had 17 points for Central.
Central was scheduled to play Lanier this past Tuesday after Citizen press time. The Red Devils will be at home on Friday against Lanett and on Saturday against Hardaway.
