Writing stories about this community is a wonderful job and responsibility. It’s interesting each and every day. But this time of the year with the announcement of the Alabama Press Association Media Awards, we get to see how we stacked up against newspapers across the state.
This year, The Citizen of East Alabama won 17 awards. There are still 15 awards that won’t be announced until the annual Summer Convention June 29.
This year, 90 publications in Alabama submitted 3,394 entries for the contest. The Illinois Press Association judged the entries.
The Citizen won:
Third place Best Spot New Story for “Town Recovering After Tragedy, Community Comes Together” by Denise DuBois; Third place best Business Story for “Possum Trot” by DuBois; First place for “Empower the Next Generation” by DuBois; Third place for “Chad, We’re Praying for You” by DuBois; First place Best Sports News In-Depth for “Road to the Championship” by Mark Clark; Third place Best Sports Single Event for “Central Wins, Finished” by Clark; Second place Best Feature Photo for “Butch Anthony Possum Trot” by DuBois; First place Best Sports Photo for “Raines has Helmet Turned” by Tyler Melton; Second place Best Headline for “Nothing Sour about Pickleball” by Clark; Third place Best Single Ad under half page by Bradley Beasley; Second place Best Single Ad over half page by Beasley; First place Best Regular Special Section for “Who’s Next Football Guide;” Third place for One Time Special Section for “F1NISHED;” Third place for best In-Paper Promotion by Beasley; Second place for Best Signature Page for “Eat Local” by Beasley; Third place for Best Presentation of Online Advertising” by Beasley.; and Third place for Best Innovative Online Advertising by Beasley.
