When Central High Lady Red Devils coach Carolyn Wright looks over her team’s report card at the end of each game, she can see whether the squad is improving. So far, the answer is “yes.”
The Lady Red Devils improved to 4-4 last week by defeating two of three opponents. The team defeated Spencer High 73-52 and Northview High 55-41. They suffered their lone loss of the week to Opelika 47-41.
“Overall, it was a good week for us. Anytime you win more than you lose, it is a good week. We are still failing in some areas of our report card, but overall we are improving. We still have to cut down on turnovers and improve our free throw shooting. We were better at rebounding the ball last week,” said Wright.
While the team is improving, Wright still has not settled on a starting five.
“Our starting lineup has changed each game. Sometimes we start with a different guard. Other games, we start with a different forward. We have shown balanced scoring so far. That is not a bad thing. When you show balanced scoring, your opponent cannot shut down just one player,” Wright said.
Wright said there are other “positives” she has seen from the team so far.
“The best thing about us is that we are showing good team effort. We are not being selfish with the basketball. We spread it around to keep everyone involved. We are still working hard. I am proud of those things,” Wright said.
Central opened last week’s play with its only loss of the week—its 47-41 loss to Opelika. The Lady Red Devils out-scored Opelika in three of the four quarters they played, but the second quarter was too much to overcome. Central led 5-3 after the first quarter. But, at halftime, Opelika was on top 25-11 as the Lady Bulldogs scored 22 points to Central’s six. In the third quarter, Central had 15 points to Opelika’s eight points and in the fourth quarter the Lady Red Devils out-scored Opelika 15-14.
Erin Johnson led Central’s scorers with eight points. Aliyah Spivey had seven points for the Lady Red Devils.
The Lady Red Devils got back on the winning track with a 73-32 victory over Spencer. The game was close after a quarter with Central on top 13-9. At halftime, Central led 31-15. At the end of the third quarter, Central led 52-23. Central out-scored Spencer 21-9 in the final eight minutes.
Johnson led Central with 17 points and was the only Lady Red Devil in double figures.
In their final game of the week, Central’s girls defeated Northview 58-41. The Lady Red Devils went ahead 13-8 in the first quarter and led 27-20 at the half. At the end of three quarters, Central led 42-30. Central scored 16 point in the fourth quarter to Northview’s 11.
Johnson was Central’s leading scorer for the third time during the week with 12 points. Alleya King and Bree Hoarce both had 10 points for Central.
Central was slated to play Lanier this past Tuesday after Citizen press time. The Lady Red Devils will play at home against Lanett on Friday and will be at home on Saturday to face Hardaway.
