Cobb named ACCC pitcher of week

By Chad Dixon

Chattahoochee Valley Community College (CVCC) starting pitcher Casey Cobb was named Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season on March 13. He struck out 11 in a 10-0 win over Wallace-Dothan on March 8.

“He has an impeccable worth ethic,” said CVCC Head Coach Adam Thomas.

“We have worked with him a lot on his change-up and I think it has become his second best pitcher next to his fastball. When a hitter is thinking 92 and you can drop in 78 for a strike, it’s a game changer!”

He leads the ACCC with a 1.24 ERA and also leads the conference with 48 strikeouts. He picked up his third win of the season on March 15 in a 10-0 win over Coastal Alabama-South. He pitched five innings, allowed one hit and struck out five. Thomas believes he projects as a high-leverage bullpen arm and will be drafted in the mid-rounds in June. He is currently committed to Alabama after his sophomore season at CVCC.

The Pirates are 20-7 on the season and 7-1 in the ACCC. They are riding a six-game winning streak after sweeping Coastal Alabama in a four-game series this weekend. On March 18, they took game one of a double header 2-1 at home. Jacob Menders picked up his ACCC leading fifth win of the season. He allowed only two hits through seven innings and struck out eight.

“(Menders) stat line is really deceiving. He was really trying to find his self in his first three starts, but since then has a 1.83 ERA in his last three starts,” Thomas added.

John Devine tied the game at one with a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the sixth. Jason Rooks hit a walk-off RBI single in the seventh to win the game. The game-winning hit gave Rooks his 30th RBI and is ranked third in the ACCC.

The Pirates’ eight-run second inning, put game two away early. Rankin Woley and Rooks hit back to back homeruns in the inning. Isaac Phillips’ homerun in the fifth forced the run rule to end the game with the Pirates winning 10-0.

Phillips was 3-for-3 with two RBI, a double and a home run. Woley’s homerun was his sixth of the season. He currently leads the nation with 48 RBI and leads the ACCC with a .500 batting average. Woley has 14 doubles on the season which also leads the conference.

“(Woley) might be the best hitter I have ever seen,” said Thomas. “I am not sure if he can keep a .500 batting average through the season, but I think you could shut him down now and he would have All-American type numbers.”

CVCC is currently tied with Coastal Alabama-North with a 7-1 conference record in the ACCC South. They will host Bishop State on March 22 for the first two games of a four-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
