Once again, weather played a role as the Glenwood tennis teams only got one match in, that against Lakeside Academy on March 7. The match with Evangel Christian that was to be played March 1 was cancelled.
Glenwood split that match with the Chiefs and Lady Chiefs as the boys lost a hard-fought 4-3 match against the Chiefs, while the Lady Gators dominated Lakeside 7-0.
In the five singles matches, the Lady Gators allowed only two games to Lakeside. Winning were Katie Jones, Ella Nelson, Georgia Denzik, Autumn McCain and Claire Mitchell. Denzik returned to action after missing two matches with an ankle sprain. Jones teamed with Denzik and McCain teamed with Mitchell to sweep the doubles.
The boys match was a battle between Lakeside’s upper classmen versus the Gators youth.
“They came with only four players,” reported Glenwood tennis coach Julie Humphries.
After Kincaid Foster won at No. 1, Breckyn Waller, Nick Thompson and Wyatt Wilkerson all lost in singles. One of those was Thompson’s three-set match as he lost in the third set tiebreaker after coming back to win the second set. Will Haines won by forfeit.
The Gators No. 1 doubles of Foster and Waller lost but Thompson and Waller won at No. 2, winning 8-7 and 10-8 in the set tiebreak.
Glenwood met Springwood in a girl’s only match on the March 12, and then face Pike today. The teams will not return to play until the March 25 against Emmanuel.
