Yes, the old sign for the Dr. Ken Edwards’ practice is still on the corner of Crawford Road and 20thAvenue, but it will soon be replaced by a new sign for a new chiropractor. Dr. John H. Kent, Jr., D.C., is that new chiropractor and he is now open for business at 1602 20thAve. in Phenix City.

Kent decided to take a chance on the space, because he was able to buy the building and equipment for a lot less than he’d have to pay if he’d rented an office, and it’s perfect for his needs.

“It was a good opportunity with low overhead in an established area,” he explained.

He joined the East Alabama Chamber of Commerce and hopes to be able to interact more with the community at events once he and his family are settled. Currently, they still live two hours away while they look for a home in East Alabama and try to sell their South Georgia home. He has lived in North Georgia as well, where he worked for Arrowhead and other smaller clinics.

Kent, 40, grew up in Akron Ohio where he attended Springfield High School and where he played soccer. Thrown against a wall during indoor league play, Kent had sustained a serious back injury. He had to wear a metal cast and resort to taking prescription medicine, what he called “horse tranquilizers,” but nothing helped the pain. That’s why Kent initially chose to become a chiropractor—to solve his own problem.

He attended Kent State University, Akron University, and Catawba College in North Carolina before earning a bachelor of science degree in biology and chemistry from Excelsior College in New York. He graduated from Life University in 2006, earning his doctor of chiropractic degree.

Kent met his wife Michelle in 2005 when his best friend set him on a blind date. They have now been married 13 years and have two children–a son, Caden, who is 10 and daughter Camryn, 6. Michelle works in the office.

“It’s coming around,” Kent said of his business. “We started out slow and had to deal with some of Dr. Edwards’ negativity, but as people hear about us they’re coming in and trying us out. It’s been pretty good.”

Kent is a family chiropractor, but he also does D.O.T. exams using a computerized system with a consultant and compliance officer.  He has 10 years of experience in personal injury and his office and also offers drug testing. He is working on building a website and social media presence. For more information, or to set up an appointment, call Kent’s office at 334-297-2225.
