Tennis: Lady Gators get first win
By Ronald Frazier
Glenwood’s Lady Gators (1-1) got their first team win of 2019 when they defeated Westfield Academy, 5-2 on the 25th. The boys (0-2) were not as lucky as they dropped a close 4-3 decision to Westfield.
This was only each team’s second match of the year as three team matches were cancelled due to the weather. Glenwood was to host Morgan Academy and Northside on Feb. 19 at Cliff Farrar Tennis Center, but heavy rains in the region washed those two matches away. Then the threat of another storm cancelled the match with Trinity School.
The Lady Gators got key wins from their No. 1 singles player as she won her slot and then teamed with Claire Mitchell to also win at No. 1 doubles. Also taking victories in singles were Autumn McCain at No. 3, Mitchell at No. 4 and Maggie Adams at No. 5.
Hard luck came to Ella Nelson who lost at No. 2 singles and she and McCain lost at No. 2 doubles.
The Lady Gators also lost Georgia Denzik, who had been playing No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles to a sprained ankle.
“I am pretty sure she will be out at least a week,” Glenwood coach Julie Humphries said.
In the boys 4-3 loss, No. 2 Brecklyn Waller won his singles, as well as Wyatt Wilkerson at No. 3. Kincaid Foster lost his No. 1 singles match but did team with Waller to win at No. 1 doubles.
The good news for the boys’ team was the return of Will Haines. Haines is left-handed and, although has not been playing due to a right arm injury, did return to action against Westfield.
