The season for fresh, colorful produce is here, and it’s never been a better time to make new recipes at home. With that in mind, Nellie’s Fried Pies in Phenix City is offering fresh produce boxes for $21.
Angela Vollmer, owner of Nellie’s Fried Pies, began working with Quality Produce in Opelika a few weeks ago to get produce boxes to the area.
Quality Produce, she said, provides food for Muscogee County Schools, Russell County Schools, Lee County Schools, local restaurants, and even hospitals.
When the COVID-19 pandemic closed schools and restaurants, the produce company was still getting food in, but the demand was gone. Instead of letting it go to waste, they began putting together boxes for people in the community to pick up.
“Opelika is a distance to drive,” Vollmer said. “I asked if they would work with me and let me take orders. I never expected it to get on this level.”
The first week, Vollmer said 24 locals ordered boxes to pick up at her 3738 Opelika Road location. The second week saw almost 90 people. The last few weeks, more than 100 people have ordered and picked up boxes of fresh fruit and veggies.
“It’s amazing what they put in there,” she said. Vollmer said there is always a variety of apples. There are bananas, and sometimes fresh garlic, tomatoes, corn, cabbage, squash, and so much more. “I’ve never had any complaints about the value. The last few weeks we’ve had beautiful heirloom tomatoes.”
While customers cannot request what goes in the boxes, they are sure to have a colorful assortment.
“This has been my way of trying to help people, especially elderly people so they don’t have to get out to a big box store to get produce,” Vollmer said.
The boxes are $21. Vollmer posts to Nellie’s Fried Pies Facebook page when it’s time to order. Wednesday is the cut-off day and boxes are delivered Thursdays. Vollmer provides pickup times on Thursday from 2-5 p.m. ET at her store. Customers can prepay or pay with cash or card during pickup.
While Vollmer’s store is still closed, she does take fried pie orders when she posts produce box orders. For more information, visit Nellie’s Fried Pies Facebook page.
