In 1993, America met Scottie Smalls when he moved to a new neighborhood and made friends with a group of kids who play baseball at the sandlot. The iconic phrase “You’re killing me Smalls” was introduced and is still heard today.
Get ready to hear it again on June 19 when the City of Smiths Station hosts a drive-in movie night in the Smiths Station Junior High parking lot.
“We are excited about the drive-in movie,” said Smiths Station Mayor F.L. “Bubba” Copeland. “We have a yearly summer movie night however due to our current social distancing guidelines, we decided to do a drive-in. As a kid, I heard stories of drive-ins in Phenix City and Columbus. We are excited to bring back some of those memories. The movie The Sandlot is picked to mirror the time frame of the heyday of the drive-in theaters.”
In the true spirit of drive-ins, the movie will start once the sky gets dark around 9 p.m. ET and the audio will be broadcast through the radio.
The night will include food trucks, funnel cakes, ice cream and more.
Copeland urges the community to come out and enjoy dinner and a movie.
