Glenwood takes three of four tennis matches

Glenwood’s tennis teams had a busy week with two, scheduled matches and two make-up matches as both the Gators and Lady Gators head into the spring break for a week off.

On March 12, Glenwood’s Lady Gators had a regular scheduled match with Springwood, who was third in the 2018 state boys’ championships and did not field a boys’ team for 2019. For that reason, Glenwood coach Julie Humphries was able to host Northside Methodist and Morgan Academy on the same day, a match that had been previously scheduled in February.

In the scheduled match, the Lady Gators upended Springwood 6-1. Katie Jones, Ella Nelson, Georgia Denzik and Claire Mitchell all won their singles matches. Then Denzik and Jones won at No. 1 doubles and Autumn McCain got revenge for her singles loss as she and Mitchell won easily at No. 2 doubles.

Both boys and girls then dominated Northside Methodist as both boys and girls won 7-0.

The only matches played in the boys were by No. 1 Kincaid Foster and No. 5 Will Haines and both players won. Following those two singles matches, Northside then defaulted the other three singles positions and both doubles positions.

It was a similar situation with the girls’ matches as Katie Jones at No. 1 captured the only match played and the visitors again defaulted the other positions.

Following those two matches, Glenwood then faced the two-time defending boys and girls champions, Morgan Academy and both teams were defeated 7-0.

Only Foster and Wyatt Wilkerson were able to even win games in the five singles matches and the Gators won only three games in two doubles matches.

For the girls, Jones’ match at No. 1 was the closest as she lost 8-6. No other singles player for Glenwood won a game against the Lady Volunteers. Jones won two games at No. 1 doubles, but No. 2 doubles was blanked 8-0.

On March 14, Glenwood hosted Pike Liberal Arts, and the Lady Gators won 5-2 while the boys lost to the Patriots by the same score.

Jones, McCain and Mitchell won their singles matches, and the Lady Gators won both doubles matches.

In the boys’ 5-2 loss, Haines won at No. 5 singles, and Wilkerson and Nick Thompson avenged their singles losses by combining to win their doubles match at No. 2.

Both teams will be off until March 25 when the Gators and Lady Gators will spend time on the road, meeting Emmanuel and then Trinity March 26 before coming home to host Lee-Scott in their final home match on March 28. Glenwood’s final regular season match will be April 1 on the road against Fort Dale Academy.
