Glenwood had their four-game win streak snapped when the Gators battled Southland Academy in Americus and lost a tough one on Jan. 4, 53-50. The Gators made it four in a row when they traveled to Cecil and battled Macon East, defeating the Knights, 58-47. The 1-1 road trip gives Glenwood a 13-6 record for the season.
Against Southland, free throws were the difference in the contest, according to Glenwood head coach Dusty Perdue.
“I felt there may have been some questionable calls, but the difference was they went 23 of 30 from the foul line, and we were nine of 19,” Perdue pointed out. “They had 11 more free throws and won by three and the game was tied in the final minute of play. I felt we may have let this one get away from us.”
Bryce Rozier was the only Gator in double figures in this game with 12 points, as Owen Exley of the Raiders was the top scorer in the game with 15.
“We played flat in the third quarter and were in foul trouble the entire game,” Perdue said.
There was no trouble like that against the Knights on Jan. 2, as Glenwood probably put together as good a team scoring effort as they have had all season.
Four of the five starters for Glenwood were in double figures led by Landis Boyd with 13. The fifth starter, Ethan Craw, only missed double figures by one basket as he had eight.
Behind Boyd was Justin Jackson with 11 and Kody Bence and Rosier with 10 each.
“We played really good team basketball and just played as a team pretty much the whole game,” Perdue said. “I was very proud of this win against a very big athletic Macon East team. We smothered their post game on the inside and dared them to shoot the ball from the outside and it really worked for us.”
The Gators will take on Ezekiel Academy on the Jan. 11 and Calvary Christian on Jan. 13, before opening area play.
