Lady Gators win area soccer championship

By Ronald Frazier

Glenwood’s Lady Gators clinched the area championship last Saturday when they handed Northside Methodist an 8-1 walloping at the Glenwood soccer field.

In addition to that win, the boys soccer team came through with a 3-2 win over Northside on penalty kicks to clinch a berth in the boys’ state playoffs. Earlier in the year the Knights won 3-1 in a game played in Dothan.

The Gators also defeated Lyman Ward earlier in the week to improve to 8-5-1 on the year. Details of the two victories were not available.

In the Lady Gators two games, defense was the star as Taylor Johnson saved five Ezekiel shots out of six attempts. Emily Sawtelle got the Lady Gators on the board with their only goal in the game.

This was the second time this season that Glenwood and Ezekiel have battled to a 1-1 tie.

However the win against Northside Methodist was important as it not only clinched the area title but ensured that Glenwood’s first round of the playoffs next Tuesday will be played at Sammy Howard field.

Three different Lady Gators scored two goals, Sawtelle, Jordyn Wheeler and Caitlin Obert.

“Caitlyn Obert has started to find the back of the net with her shots,” Glenwood coach John Robertson said.

“We are starting to come around as a team and that is important moving forward,” Robertson said.”That is important because once the playoffs start, the opposition will only get harder.”

On defense, keeper Johnson held her own and allowed only a single Lady Knight goal.

In addition to those six goals, two Glenwood players scored for the first time in 2019 against the Lady Knights, defender Natalie McKay and Emily Ivey.

“Both of them were very excited.” Robertson noted.

The Northside Methodist game was to end the regular season but Glenwood added a game April 9th against Fort Dale. Glenwood’s opponent in first round in both the boys and girls’ first round had not yet been determined.

“I did not want for us not to play until the 15th so I was able to add a game,” said Robertson of the additional contest.
