Phenix City Intermediate School and South Girard School have been selected to receive Alabama Arts Education Initiative (AAEI) Grants in the amount of $12,500 and $25,000 respectively. This is the first year South Girard School has received funding. The monetary resource will be used to fund the following: salaries and benefits for three after-school teachers for art, drama, and chorus; one tuba; 12 hand drums (for special populations collaboration with the band); wireless stage mics; art supplies; materials to create a gallery space for visual arts; sheet music; two large tables for art; theater supplies; two professional development sessions for classroom teachers for art integration; and faculty members will attend a week-long state arts conference (SAIL) this summer.

This is the second consecutive year Phenix City Intermediate School has been awarded this grant. A large majority of the grant will be used for stage updates; professional development for the staff; stipends for teachers of choir, theater, and visual art. Funds will also be used to purchase rights to plays; arts supplies; stage supplies for designs; school-wide field trips to the Springer.

Both schools will collaborate with Central High School’s fine arts department to foster seamless transition of the arts from middle to high school.
