Chef John Chapiewski knows a sweet opportunity when he sees one. After his Central High School culinary students won Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia’s 2017 National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend Dessert Competition in the Columbus region, he offered to host a competition for high school students. On Feb. 20, three area Alabama schools answered the challenge, submitting eight delectable entries.
Central High School sophomore Garret Mason won first place with his Do-si-do® Peanut Butter Pie. Second place went to Russell County High School freshman Raven Rodriguez for her Thin Mint® Brownie, and Central High School sophomore Jade Tharpe captured third place with her S’mores™ Bars. Central High School, Opelika High School and Russell County High School submitted contest entries.
The goals of the high school Career Tech programs compliment those of the Girl Scout Cookie Program, the largest girl-run business in the world. The Girl Scout program teaches girls five key financial literacy skills: goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. The program powers amazing activities for thousands of Girl Scouts in kindergarten through 12th grade.
“I like the accomplishment of it,” said Girl Scout Brownie Jaira Watkins, when asked what she liked most about the Girl Scout Cookie Program. Jaira and her sister, Jordyn, a Girl Scout Daisy, served as contest judges. Both were excited to be part of the high school competition,
“Our Career Tech programs replicate real world industry and give students experience that will translate into stronger skills and a better workforce. They let our students shine,” said Jason Sasser, Director of Career Tech for Phenix City Schools.
This weekend Girl Scouts will celebrate the next century of female entrepreneurs during National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend. The final weekend of the local cookie sale ends on March 4.
