In case you missed the ad announcement, the new Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen restaurant at 3540 Hwy 280 (between Golden Acre’s Baptist Church and Ezell’s Catfish), is now open. While Columbus has two Popeyes in Columbus, Phenix City hasn’t had a Popeyes since the early 90s when the one on the 900 block of Hwy 280 closed.
Popeyes began in 1972 by Alvin C. Copeland Sr., in New Orleans as “Chicken on the Run,” but after failure to thrive, Copeland renamed the restaurant to Popeyes after a character of the same name in the movie The French Connection. He changed the menu from traditional southern style chicken to spicy, New Orleans style and people loved it. The first franchise opened in Louisiana in 1976. In 1984, after the addition of buttermilk biscuits, the restaurant went international and opened a restaurant in Canada.
If you haven’t been to Popeyes, you are missing a treat. While famous for their Bonafide® Chicken, they also have seafood, sandwiches like Po’ Boys, lean and healthy “Live Well” options, and awesome sauces.
