Archery Shooters Association Pro/AM Championship 2018

ASA hopes for record-breaking participation this year

For more than 15 years the Archery Shooters Association Pro/AM Championship has brought participants and fans from all over the world to Russell County. Scheduled again at the Uchee Creek Campground Activity Center in late March, the championship is sponsored by New Breed Archery and Black Eagle Arrows.

“We are grateful to Sheriff (Heath) Taylor and the Russell County Sheriff’s Department, the Phenix City -Russell CountyChamber of Commerce and Fort Benning,” ASA-Ala. owner Mike Tyrell said. “Also, the event is possible because of the support of the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation and the wonderful quality of the Uchee Creek facility.”

In the 2017 event visitors brought about $2.5 million in revenue for the county, according to Lucas Brown, director of tourism for the Phenix City-Russell County Visitors Bureau. He also estimated that last year’s tournament attracted about 2,400 tourists to Russell County.

“Visitors spend significantly more per day during the event than local residents,” Brown said. Three were more than 1,800 archers who participated in 2017. Tyrell said the ASA hopes to see 1,900-2,000 shooters in this year’s event.

Daniel Morgan of Athens, Ga., participated last year and won second place in the military shoot. He will compete again this year. “The ASA and how they do this for the military is one of the best set-ups we go to every year,” Morgan said. “I can’t say enough good things about the organization and the way they run things, or the Uchee Creek facility.”

April Girvin and her family will come all the way from Kokomo, Ind., to compete. She has shot  in the Women’s Pro shoot every year for the last decade. This year will be no exception. “I always enjoy that shoot when it’s not in August,” Girvin said, laughing. “But we do always enjoy that shoot. Everything we need is right there with the tournament village and we stay at a hotel down the road in Phenix City.”

Set-up for the championship will begin March 19 and the shoot will run from March 22 through March 25, with open registration. For more information about the championship, call (770) 795-0232, or visit www.asaarchery.com.

The ASA Military Shoot will be held March 23 during the ASA championship and is open to all MWR patrons, including active duty, retirees, family members and DoD employees. All ASA Pro/AM rules will apply. Registration is $40 per team through March 21 and $50 the day of the event (includes lunch). For more information on the Military Shoot, call (706) 545-4053.

The four-day event is spectator friendly and free to the public.
