Central High School to perform Broadway musical Sister Act March 2-4
By Toni Stauffer
Central High School’s performing arts club, Encore Productions, will perform the uplifting Broadway musical Sister Act during the first week of March. Based on the 1992 hit film starring comedian and actress Whoopi Goldberg, Sister Act first graced the stage in 2006 and has since has been performed in 20 countries and translated into eight languages.
The PG-13 production features original music by eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken, who has been responsible for such Broadway hits as Newsies, Beauty and the Beast, and Little Shop of Horrors.
The main character, lounge singer Deloris Van Cartier, goes into hiding in a convent after witnessing a murder. To keep her cover, she pretends to be a nun named Sister Mary Clarence. Hilarious hijinks ensue as the free-spirited Deloris tries to blend in under the stern gaze of Mother Superior. Deloris uses her past singing experience to inspire the convent’s choir. In helping the other women find their power, Deloris discovers a whole new wonderful world and that she has value in it.
Encore Productions is headed by Artistic Director Ginger Dempsey and Musical Director Brady McNeil.
“We’re very excited about this upcoming performance,” Dempsey said. “It’s a very entertaining show. The kids are doing a good job and are having fun with it.”
The lead of Deloris will be performed by sophomore Ashley Lane and senior Garrett Norris will perform the role of Mother Superior.
The next production will be The Emperor’s New Clothes scheduled for May 1.
