How would you feel about strolling up the Phenix City Riverwalk towards Troy’s Riverfront campus and the Marriott hotel and being greeted by a splash of colorful art created by local artists?
That’s part of the vision a council of people have for an art park that will be constructed in Phenix City in a space just off Whitewater Avenue. On Saturday, from 9 a.m. to noon ET, there will be an Art Park Vision Fest at what could be the site of the art park – the space between the 13th Street Bridge and the Pedestrian bridge and Marriott. The council is asking the community to come celebrate art and give opinions of what the space could look like. There will be boards available to draw and map what you think should go in the park.
During the event, there will be rock painting, a drum circle, belly dancers, a graffiti demonstration, face painting and more. The event is family friendly. A mural by local folk artist Butch Anthony will also be unveiled.
Why an art park in phenix city?
“This is a community Art project that will add so much to our community and be so much fun. It will be great for our children and our artists, both established and emerging. It will be fun for young and for old. It will provide a place to linger, find shade, swing in a hammock, listen to music, watch an outdoor movie and appreciate our local art and artists. It’s a place where you will be able to bring your kids, your parents, your spouse, your girlfriend and boyfriend, even your animals. It will be a wonderful and rewarding community project.”
David White, Vice Chancellor Troy’s Phenix City Campus
“The availability of art is one of the key indications of a healthy community and the Phenix City, Columbus and Fort Benning area abounds in artistic opportunities. I am very excited about all the grassroots efforts being made – many with hardly any budget and just a few individuals, but with great enthusiasm. One effort by Smiley (Rachel White) and others is Spark Art. They are making art available for youth, elderly and everyone! Their proposed idea for an “Art Park” in Phenix City is exhilarating and the support that it has gotten from “bottom to top” in the community is both heartwarming and exciting!
