Spelling champ wins after 45 rounds

In an unusually long competition, it took 35 rounds one-on-one with another participant before Nolin Brashears of South Girard was declared the winner of Russell County’s spelling bee Feb. 8.

Overall, Brashiers outlasted all other competitors through a total of 45 rounds. Brashiers’ winning word was “thesaurus.”

The word that stumped Sherwood Elementary’s Kobe Williams, who won second place, was “mole,” a word describing a Mexican sauce. The word that made the third place winner, Destini Miranda of Oliver Elementary stumble in the bee’s 10th round was “renegade.”
