If you’ve been following my column for any length of time, you know that I have a goal every year to do something new each month. The premise behind that goal is so that I can get out of my comfort zone and try new, exciting things regularly.
When someone asks you, “what do you like to do for fun?” what is your answer? A lot of times, we have to sit and think about the things we enjoy doing. And sometimes, we realize that we’re boring.
When I think of my hobbies, I list them as: weight lifting, reading, writing, spending time with my family, playing with my dogs, working on projects in my house, scrapbooking and things similar to that. There isn’t really anything unique that stands out. Most everyone likes those things. That’s why it was so important to me to try new things every month. Well that goal fell by the wayside for the most part because it’s not always easy to come up with new things to do.
Except this past weekend.
One of my dear friends caught me in the gym last week and talked about visiting Archery Connection in Phenix City and shooting on their lanes.
I didn’t even realize that you could rent their bows and arrows and shoot on their lanes. I thought it was only for people looking to purchase their own bows or for those who already had their own equipment. It wasn’t two days later that I found myself in the store on Lakewood Drive holding a rented bow staring down the lane at a target. The owner stood beside me telling me exactly how to hold the bow and how to aim.
I let the string go and the arrow flew right to the target. It wasn’t too many arrows later that my technique improve so much that I was hitting the center of the target from their farthest shooting line. I felt amazing.
The next day, I was a little sore, but it didn’t matter. For an hour, I felt like Katniss Everdeen. I felt awesome and unique. I thought to myself, “how many women can shoot bows and arrows?” Definitely more should, in my opinion.
It’s always fun to try something new and realize that you really enjoy this new thing. For me, this past weekend, it was archery. Next time, it may be rock climbing (I’ve never tried it, so we’ll see). The point is that we have to get out of our comfort zone. I don’t want to be boring, but I really have to work at finding cool things. Yuu are probably the same way. Besides, it makes for a fun story and great pictures to share on social media.
So what new, fun thing are you trying?
