“I can’t get no satisfaction, I can’t get no satisfaction. I’ve tried and I’ve tried. I can’t get no satisfaction.”
The woman at the well had many relationships, but nothing filled the longing in her soul. Jesus offered her living water where she would never have to live an unsatisfied life again.
When my girls were little, they had a toy. It was a square with different shaped holes in it. On the end was a trap door you could open and pour out the shapes that were inside. Then you had to try to get the different shaped pieces into the right hole. No matter how hard you tried, you could never get a round shape into a square hole. Only a round shape fits into a round hole.
It is said that every human being is born with a God-shaped void in his heart. Try as we may, sex, drugs, money, alcohol, wild living: none of it satisfies that longing in our soul.
People talk about how narrow-minded Christians are to say that Jesus is the only way. While people argue over religion, their hearts still cry out. They’re empty and yearning for satisfaction. Only when a person recognizes Jesus as God, Lord, and Savior does that void get filled. It’s only as we find ourselves in Christ that we really find ourselves. God created us. We are the work of His hands. In Him we find our purpose, our destiny, fulfillment, peace, joy, satisfaction. There is no more searching now that you’ve found Him.
There’s a new life ahead. Walking in His presence. Enjoying Him and living in His love. The Holy Spirit becomes in us an artesian well of living water springing up perpetually unto everlasting life. The way of the sinner is hard, confusing, disappointing. The way of a person made right with God through the blood of Jesus is full of life, the very life of God. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow us all the days of our life and we shall swell in the House of the Lord forever.
A Hindu trader in India once asked a missionary, “What do you put on your face to make it shine?” With surprise the man of God answered, “I don’t put anything on it!” His questioner began to lose patience and said emphatically, “Yes, you do!” All of you who believe in Jesus seem to have it. I’ve seen it in the towns of Agra and Surat, and even in the city of Bombay.” Suddenly the Christian understood, and his face glowed even more as he said, “Now I know what you mean, and I will tell you the secret. It’s not something we put on from the outside but something that comes from within. It’s the reflection of the light of God in our hearts.
“I am satisfied, satisfied with Jesus. I am satisfied, satisfied with Him. Every need has been supplied. Praise the Lord I’m satisfied. Fully satisfied, satisfied with Him.”
