Editorial: The second greatest time of the year is upon us

Reading Time: 1 minute

While it may not be time yet for cozy socks and pumpkin spice everything, the season is nearing, as high school football kicks off this week with a few scrimmage games and some that mean more to the season.

Central High’s got “Meet the Devils” at Garrett-Harrison Stadium tomorrow at 6 p.m. ET with a scrimmage game to follow. For admission, bring one nonperishable food item. Glenwood opens the season tomorrow night at Huntingdon College in Montgomery against Monroe Academy.

Every year, the staff at The Citizen works with high school coaches and photographers to assemble the most comprehensive football magazine for East Alabama. There are team pictures, individual pictures of players, features on Central High, Glenwood, Russell County High and Smiths Station High (all appearing in alphabetical order in case you were wondering), college features and schedules.

Each year, we decide on a theme for the cover and sports writer Mark Clark composes a story that deals with the theme. This year, we called it “Who’s Next?” because there are so many players that have come out of East Alabama who are making great plays at the next level (did anyone see the story of Justyn Ross’s one-handed catch while practicing with Clemson?).

There are plenty of players to watch this year who are sure to sign scholarships to play in college, and you never know, someone may go to the NFL.

We hope you enjoy the magazine. We want to thank all the businesses and individuals who advertise with us year after year, making it possible. We’d also like to thank Glenn Peppers and Tyler Melton for taking photos of the teams and players, as well as Lifetouch for providing the photos of Russell County players.
