Sarah West: Summer events near home

Reading Time: 2 minutes

By July each year, I find myself gravitating toward points of rest and renewal. Roadside market stands, watermelons sold from truck beds and mid-summer garden yields present comforts of home. Generous rains have encouraged a lawn to green with exuberance. I delve into my cookbooks yearning to create delectable dishes with bountiful ingredients. In studio, students are returning from seaside vacations and June day camps. With weeks of summer left, we retreat from the rising temperatures, and taking up new projects, we devote ourselves to concentrations in varying mediums. Those ambitious paintings the art student has long awaited are now imminent. The lasting light illuminates the canvas, and the freeing spirit of the season prompts experimentation. Together we creatively explore, and enjoy annual community gatherings filled with family fun and neighborly interaction.

During mid-July, several events will be offered in the Smiths Station area. Hosted by the City of Smiths Station, the Second Annual Family Film Night will offer area residents and the community a festive evening in the park. You are invited to attend this special evening at the Smiths Station Sports Complex for family fun, festivities, food, music and a movie, celebrating community. Bring your chairs, and arrive early for costume contests, local food vendors and other activities. This event is free, family friendly and open to all- July 14, 6:30 p.m. ET.

Explore the arts with Daily Art Activities in Studio at the Sarah West Gallery of Fine Art.
