Sarah West: Sustainable Solutions – Creatively

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Caught amid the currents of progress, I tether to sustainable convictions. The waters rise, the soil darkens, and up springs new life. Soul searching in the quite hours prompts balance. With each new day, I brave the tide. I meditate on ways that, together, we may rise.

The season inspires the writing of new chapters. I’ve taken my class studio beyond the corridor. Into the schools, a new extension of community cultural outreach has been forged. I began this endeavor with a principle desire to provide more, something of resonant necessity at its core. Through recognition of abilities and common threads of compassion, we can all learn how capable we really are.

In Smiths Station area schools, local educators recognized a need. Through desire to provide creative, sustainable solutions, we found the answer in empathy. This spring, the Sarah West Artistic Mentoring Program was introduced in participating local schools, as part of the after school extended day opportunities. In debut season, fine art mentors, enrolled students and school faculty have experienced the positive and influential role that art plays in our life; shared through school, home and work. At the beginning and end of each new week, art mentors and students gather together to explore, learn, create and meditate in thoughtful creativity.

As the school years ends, fine art students from Wacoochee and West Smiths Station Elementary Schools, will prepare to share a selection of recent works with the community. During the summer months, rotating exhibitions at Smiths Station City Hall Art Galleries will feature Meditative Paintings and Fundamental Drawings created by these students. These unique exhibitions exemplify the ongoing endeavors for sustainability, cultural involvements, and artistic achievement encouraged and supported by our community, leaders, educators and advocates.

In addition, through continued collaboration with area educators, the Sarah West Gallery of Fine Art has announced, After School Art Classes will return to Wacoochee and West Smiths Station Elementary Schools for the next full calendar school year. The Sarah West Artistic Mentoring Program will host four seasons of After School Art Classes August 2018- May 2019. Early Enrollment is now open.
