Tim Cole: Praying the Word of God

Reading Time: 2 minutes

There is nothing more powerful to pray than the Word of God, the words of the Bible. The Word of God is alive and powerful, more effective than a two-edged sword. Jesus didn’t teach his disciples to sing, to preach, to teach, to build buildings, etc. (And all these things are important). He did teach them to pray.

Prayer is the most important activity in the Christian life. It is our lifeline to God. It is the way we communicate with God and He communicates with us. The red hot, fervent prayer of a person cleansed in the blood of Jesus is amazingly powerful in its working. The key to powerful prayer is that it comes from the heart, not just the mouth or mind. That it is our relationship with God expressed in words that honor Him.

John Wesley said, “God will do nothing in the earth unless a human being asks Him to do so. “There are many wonderful prayers in the Word of God we can pray. The most popular is the Lord’s Prayer (Also called the Model Prayer). “Our Father who art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.”

Aaron’s priestly prayer is popular, too. Christians are all priests unto God through Christ. “The Lord bless you and keep you;  the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.” The prayer of Jabez was made popular through a book by Bruce Wilkinson.

“Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” The apostle Paul shared some of his powerful prayers in his writings. My Mama was an intercessor, a prayer warrior. She had notebooks full of prayers from the Word of God. She would write out scriptures and pray them over people she was lifting up in prayer. There are many more prayers in the Bible than I have mentioned, but truly any promise in the Bible can become a heartfelt prayer. Mama would leave blanks in her prayers so she could put the name of the person she was praying for in the prayer. She saw real miracles through her prayers. People are always looking for a way to minister. Doors don’t always seem to be open. This is one door that is always open. The minute you give yourself to God in prayer, you are in the ministry. God will put people on your heart and show you how to pray them through. “Praying through” is an old timey phrase that means we pray until the burden of prayer becomes a shout of victory in our heart.
