The varsity Smiths Station Panthers are geared up to start their 2019-2020 basketball season. The Panthers are led by Steven Davis who is entering his ninth season with the program.
“We are really young this year. I want to make sure we get better every time we play,” Davis said about the goals he wants his team to accomplish this year. “Then we want to make the playoffs.”
The Panthers finished the 2018-2019 season 17-14 overall and 1-3 in the 7A Area 4 Region. Their season ended as the runner-up in the area tournament to Central and was knocked out of the semi-finals in the state tournament by Robert E. Lee, 91-50.
The 7A Area 4 Region consists of three teams: Smiths Station, Central, and Auburn. The Panthers will play Central on Jan. 10 at home and will play Central on Jan. 17 in Phenix City. Auburn comes to town on Jan. 14 and goes up the road to Auburn on Jan 28.
Last year’s team had eight seniors leave, and they have five seniors on the roster this year to look up for leadership. Some Panthers who may be leading the team this year are: junior point-guard Donovan Pearman, freshman backup point-guard Devyn Pearman, and sophomore forward Ahmari Peabody.
The varsity boys’ team will play in three tournaments this season. The first will be the Jag Classic at Spain Park High School in Birmingham on Nov. 23; Lee County Holiday Classic on Dec. 19-21, 2019 at Smiths Station High School, and the Columbus Christmas Classic on Dec. 31 at Jordan High School in Columbus, Ga.
The Panthers were prepared to take on Valley for their season opener on Nov. 15, but the game was cancelled due to a scheduling conflict with the Valley football team advancing in the playoffs. The game will be made up on a date that hasn’t been determined yet. Smiths Station won both contests last season against Valley, 64-62, for the first game and 55-51 for the final contest. Smiths Station’s played against Prattville High School in Prattville on Nov. 19, after Citizen deadline. The next game will be tomorrow night against Benjamin Russell High School at Smiths Station High.
