The Phenix City Art Center, located at 1002 Airport Road, just completed the seventh year of teaching its “Just for Kids” summer art classes. PCAC president, Dale Raines, led the classes, assisted by Hospitality Coordinator Sherry Meeks and different volunteers from the community.
This summer, the center held three classes that ran from June 10 until June 28, every weekday except Tuesday for a $20 weekly fee. The children painted wild animals, such as elephants, tigers, owls, and squirrels, and learned their traits in exciting lessons.
Adult classes are offered, also taught by Raines, held on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. ET. The Art Center has a group membership fee, which is $25 per year. There will be a juried exhibition held in August. You can find more information on the Facebook site. Just search for Phenix City Art Center.
Housed in the old Phenix City airport, the mission of the center is to: “encourage participation and exploration of the arts.” The building, a small general aviation airport built in the late 40s and closed sometime between 1951 and 1962, serves as a gallery and studio.
Thanks to the city of Phenix City and C & G Heating and Air, the center recently had new air conditioning installed and is available as a rental. Call Dale Raines at 334-298-8420 for details. For more photos, see the online gallery at www.citizenofeastalabama.com.
