The Central High Lady Red Devils got a little better last week while sweeping through three opponents to improve their regular season record to 7-1. The Lady Red Devils defeated Sidney Lanier, Lanett and Hardaway high schools.

“It feels good to win three games. I feel like a brand new penny,” Central coach Carolyn Wright said. “My girls are really playing some good defense right now.”

Central’s girls will head into a pair of tournaments now as the holidays approach. This Thursday and Saturday, the squad will head to Dothan for the Northview Invitational. Central received a bye in the first round which begins Wednesday. On Thursday, the Lady Red Devils will play Enterprise in Enterprise.

Following that tournament, the team will head to the annual William Henry Shaw tournament which will not crown a winner as it has in past years. This year, each team in the tournament will play three games. Central’s girls will play South Atlanta in the first round on Thursday, Dec. 27, at Spencer High at 6:45 p.m. ET. On Friday, Dec. 28, the team faces Harris County at Northside High at 6:45 p.m. ET. On Saturday, Dec. 29, Central plays Carver at the Columbus Civic Center at 7 p.m. ET.

“I guess the format is different this year in order to get teams more games. That is fine with us. We need to play some games to get ready for when we start our area schedule. We will spend our time working on fundamentals – just focusing on the small things. We pass our report card for a game one night and then not the next. We have to be more consistent,” Wright said.

Central will come out of the holidays to play at Lanett on Jan. 2 and then play its first area game on Jan. 4.

Central began last week’s play with a 53-40 victory over Sidney Lanier. The game was tight until the final quarter. The first quarter ended with Sidney Lanier holding a 9-6 lead. At the half, the score was tied at 12-12. In the third quarter both teams scored 17 points to enter the final eight minutes with the game tied at 29-29. Central outscored Sidney Lanier 24-11 in the final quarter to win 53-40.

Erin Johnson led the Lady Red Devils with 18 points. Bree Horace had 13 points with 10 rebounds to collect a double-double. Morgan Ficklin had seven rebounds for Central.

Central defeated Lanier next, 52-24. The Lady Red Devils outscored Lanett 21-7 in the first quarter to put the game away early. By halftime, Central led 37-10.

Johnson scored 14 points to lead Central’s scorers. Aliyah Spivey scored eight points for the Lady Red Devils.

In their final game of the week, the Lady Red Devils beat Hardaway 49-22. Central led 10-4 after a quarter and 24-9 at the half. At the end of three quarters, Central held a 34-16 advantage.

Johnson had 12 points to lead her team for the third time last week. Sierra Roberts and Ficklin both had nine points for Central.
