The Chattahoochee Valley Community College (CVCC) Lady Pirates (12-6, 4-0) extended their ACCC South regular season winning streak to 16 on Jan. 25 with an 89-34 win over the Bishop State Wildcats in Mobile, Ala. The game gave the Lady Pirates a one- game lead in the ACCC South over the Wildcats.
CVCC scored 25 points in both the first and second quarter to take a 50-23 lead into the half. Timi’a Swanson led the Lady Pirates with 22 points and 14 rebounds. She also had five steals. She was nearly perfect from the free throw line sinking 9-of-10 shots. Three other CVCC players scored in double digits. Jacquece Alston scored 12 and was 6-for-9 in attempted baskets. Kelsie Towns scored 11, with three behind the three-point line. Audrey McElhaney scored 10 points with five rebounds.
As a team, CVCC was 13-for-20 from the free throw line and had a 41 percent field goal shot percentage. The Lady Pirated had 48 rebounds and forced 14 turnovers. McElhaney enters the week with 13.4 points per game, which is sixth in the ACCC.
The Lady Pirates’ five-game winning streak was snapped on Jan. 27 in Tuscaloosa, Ala., by Shelton State. The Lady Bucs closed the first quarter with a slim 19-16 lead. CVCC scored 27 points in the second quarter to take a four-point lead (43-39) to close the half. Shelton State would win the rebounding battle in the second half and finished with 38 rebounds to CVCC’s 29.
The Lady Bucs outscored CVCC 18-14 in the third and went on to an 81-74 win. Audrey McElhaney led CVCC with 20 points; she was 6-for-7 from the free throw line and 7-for-11 from the field. Alston scored 18 points and was 3-for-4 in three-point attempts. CVCC will play Lawson State (10-9, 2-1) on Feb. 3 in Birmingham, Ala.
The CVCC men’s team (7-10, 1-3) fell 85-73 to Shelton State on Jan. 27. The Bucs outscored the Pirates 45-37 in the first half. Shelton State shot for a 54.1 percent field goal rate (33-for-61) to CVCC’s 41.5 percent. The combination of Jamani Glover and Charles Norman combined for 50 points (25 each) for Shelton State. Tony Peele had 23 points for CVCC and Harvelle Smith had 18. CVCC is scheduled to play at Bevill State on Feb. 1 in Jasper, Ala., in a non-ACCC game.
