There were six area athletes selected for the 2017 Alabama Sports Writers Association All-State First Teams this past weekend. Four of the players made the Alabama Independent School Association team while two others were picked for the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 7A squad.
One of the two players selected for the Class 7A team from Central High to the first team was the state’s top college prospect Justyn Ross at wide receiver. The other player selected for the Class 7A team was Red Devils’ offensive lineman Jahlil Ryles. Both players recently played in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Football Game.
The four players from Glenwood selected to the AISA team were running back Kayleem Bonds, wide receiver Cam O’Neal, kicker Thomas Camacho and defensive lineman Kelcey Allen.
All six of the athletes selected for the First teams were seniors.
Central had three more athletes selected for the Class 7A Second Team. Running back A’montae Spivey, defensive back Devonte Mathews and linebacker Nate Jones represented the Red Devils on the squad. Spivey and Mathews are juniors while Jones is a senior.
Red Devils’ quarterback Peter Parrish, a junior, was selected as Honorable Mention to the Class 7A squad along with Smiths Station punter Tripp Vining, a senior. For the Gators, junior offensive lineman Nathaniel Trzpuc and senior defensive back Navy Harris were selected to the AISA Second Team.
