Boys’ Soccer

The Smiths Station Varsity Boys defeated Prattville on May 1 2-1 to advance the third round of the state tournament.   The Panthers scored at the seven-minute mark when Mycah Ortiz passed the ball to Allen Phouthnesy, who headed the ball in, over the Prattville goal keeper, for the first score.   Both teams went back and forth with Prattville controlling the last 15 minutes of the first half but failing to score.

Eight minutes into the second half after receiving a penalty from Prattville, Dakota Leon took a direct kick from 30 yards out, which found the head of Darren Clifford who drilled it in the back of the net for the Panthers second score. The scored stayed that way with both teams going back and forth during the second half. With two minutes left in the game, Prattville received a hand ball call in the box and took a penalty kick which made the score 2-1.

The Panthers midfield of Jonathan Dixon, Cesar Samayoa, Clayton Donahue and Leon took control of the ball, quickly put pressure on the Prattville Lions trying to score again and ran out the clock for a 2-1 victory.   Tripp Vining was in goal the whole game and had 12 saves. Jace Grant and Darren Clifford along with Ethan Girona, Chad Kelly, and Huston Hood did great on defense denying the Lions opportunities to score. Smiths Station was defeated 2-0 on May 4 by McGill-Toolen 2-0. The Panthers fell one game short of the state championship.
