Phenix City 8U wins state

Phenix City’s 8U All-Stars ran the table last weekend winning all five games that they played to win the NSA State Championship on June 23 in Alex City, Ala. They started the day with 18-3 win over Dadeville. They would go on to defeat the J.D. All-Stars 17-9. They scored seven runs in the first, five in the second and would not relinquish their lead. Karrington Slocumb, Isabelle Chastain, Leanne Osborne, Jules Griggs, Caroline Breazeale and Livvy Cook were each 3-for-3 at the plate. Chastain and Osborne drove in three runs each.

In their third game, Phenix City defeated Tallassee 15-6. Madison Davis was a perfect 4-for-4 in the leadoff spot and scored four runs. Cook was 3-for-3 including a homerun with two RBI. Chastain drove in four runs and was 3-for-4. Phenix City scored four runs in the top of the first to take the lead. Tallassee responded with a run in the bottom of the inning. Davis and Slocumb doubled and scored in the top of the second to extend the lead to 6-1.

It took a pair of extra innings in game four to defeat Holtville, but Phenix City advanced to the championship game with a 26-20 victory. Holtville scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 13 and send the game to extra innings. Davis hit a lead-off single in the top of the fifth and would later score the go-ahead run to take a 14-13 lead. Osborne, Brooke Norred, Griggs, Audrey Anna Vines and Cook singled and scored in the inning. Phenix City led 19-13 heading into the bottom of the inning, but Holtville refused to go away. They scored six runs of their own to take the game to the sixth.

Cook and Davis hit back to back singles in the top of the sixth. They scored on singles by Chastain and Osborne. Norred led the team with six RBI and came through again in the sixth. She was 5-for-5. Norred, Griggs, and Vines singled and scored. Phenix City would score seven in the inning. They were able to limit Holtville to just one run in the bottom of the sixth to win the winner’s bracket finale.

The J.D. All-Stars would win the losers’ bracket and re-match with Phenix City in the championship game. J.D. scored four in the top of the first. Osborne hit a two-run homerun in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to two. J.D. failed to score in the top of the second. Griggs singled to start the bottom of the second. She scored when Breazeale doubled. Marissa Mailhot singled and Kinsey Carlisle doubled. They both scored when Cook tripled to take a 5-4 lead.

J.D. scored three in the top of the third, but Phenix City exploded with a seven-run bottom of the inning to re-take the lead (12-7). Chastain singled, Osborne doubled and Norred tripled to start the inning. Breazeale, Vines, Carlisle and Cook each doubled to cap off the inning. The Phenix City was able to hold on and win 13-11 to claim the state championship.

Chastain and Norred were 3-for-3 in the championship. Carlisle and Cook were 2-for-2 each and combined for four extra-base hits. The Phenix City team averaged 17.8 runs per game in the tournament and outscored their opponents 89-49.
