The hot bats of the Phenix City All-Stars went silent in extra innings this past weekend as the team was eliminated in the second round of the 2018 Cal Ripken 7U state baseball tournament held at the Idle Hour Sports Complex.
After rolling past two opponents by a 34-14 margin in the pool play portion of the tournament to gain one of four byes in the first-round of bracket play, Phenix City fell to Semmes 9-6 to see its season come to a close Saturday afternoon.
In the second-round match-up, the two teams were tied 2-2 heading into the sixth and final inning of regulation. Semmes used several Phenix City errors to pull ahead 5-2 and then had Phenix City on the ropes with two outs. But, Phenix City’s squad refused to go down quietly. A pair of Semmes errors and a huge double by Kason Peterson put Phenix City within a run of tying the game which it did when the next batter, Cooper Singletary, singled.
The two teams then went to an extra inning tied at 5-5. Semmes rallied with two outs to score four runs and led 9-5. Once more Phenix City needed to stage a two-out rally to have a chance to tie or win the contest. But, the team managed only a single run and lost 9-6.
