On Saturday at 10 a.m., members of the Russell County United Daughters of the Confederacy and others honored the Unknown Confederate Soldier of the last battle of the Civil War. The soldier is buried at Lakeview Memory Gardens. His gravesite has a tombstone and a plaque. The Battle of Columbus (April 16, 1865) is also known as the Battle of Girard, which later became Phenix City. Guest Speaker Holly Beasley Wait, Executive Director of the National Civil War Naval Museum in Columbus, talked at length about conditions soldiers faced during the war and how more than 720,000 soldiers died.
